Planned Giving and Estate Planning

By Anthony Spinetta

I spent quite a bit of time putting my affairs in order last spring. My attorney, who had recently purchased new software that includes automatic reminders, reminded me that we hadn't revisited my last will and testament since I composed it over 20 years ago. That will was perfect for a recent graduate of CSU Chico who could carry all his worldly possessions in the back of his Mitsubishi pickup truck.

We'd planned a will that would last until I got married. However, I never got to that point (I knew that I forgot to do something!), and my will would have created a legal misadventure for all parties concerned.

Needless to say, we immediately composed a nice, thick folder chock full of paperwork required by our delightfully bureaucratic system. A new will was the cornerstone of six or eight legal documents, and I knew from the onset that I would leave a gift to KVMR.

I'm leaving a gift to KVMR because I admire the cultural leadership and the passionate work of its people. Three decades of KVMR's locally driven growth and evolution proves to me that my gift will be deployed and enjoyed by thoughtful, pragmatic folks.

Including KVMR in my estate planning required almost no effort. I contacted KVMR Board President Joey Jordan, and she passed along the pertinent information to my attorney. The rest was a done deal.

I first listened to KVMR while spending time each summer in the hills near Nevada City with my father. At the time, he worked as a conscientious forester and land manager. Some of the truckers and timber fallers listened to a crazy radio station that seemed to change formats every few hours. I'd never heard such a wide range of music, and I was captivated. There were no commercials, and the announcers were having a blast!

Over the next thirty (well, almost) years, the goofy little radio station morphed into a powerful force introducing modern culture, a world view, local political awareness, a healthy appreciation for local talent, and an abundance of music to the Sierra Foothills. KVMR prevailed through numerous obstacles, and the station matured beautifully over time.

I anticipate that several decades will pass before my gift is given. I'm content that my affairs are in order, and I'm excited about doing my part to ensure KVMR's future success. I hope that many of you will survive me to enjoy the fruits of my legacy, and I invite you to join me by remembering KVMR in your estate planning.
